Since 2006, the "Flower Show Match" has been an annual fixture between George Sherston's XI and Matfield
Cricket Club, and is played on the village green in Siegfried Sassoon's native village of Matfield. There is some poetic
licence involved, since the original match depicted in Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man was based on one that took place
in the neighbouring village of Brenchley.
The 2009 match took place on Matfield village green on Wednesday
22nd July 2009. George Sherston's XI followed up their 2008 victory, winning by five wickets.
Derek Underwood presented the trophy to the winning captain.
For the first time, the cricket match was preceded by a Golf Day, which took place at Lamberhurst on
Tuesday 21 July, and was won by Neville Fox.
Next year's match will take place in July 2010, same time, same place. If you are interested in playing,
umpiring, scoring, or supporting, please get in touch with Bob Miller or Deb Fisher.
