The inaugural cricket match between George Sherston's XI and Matfield Cricket Club took place on Wednesday
26th July 2006, at Matfield Green cricket ground. The recently-extended Jack Wish Pavilion welcomed the visitors, captained
by Andrew Pinnell of Heytesbury. The event not only complemented the SSF celebrations commemorating
the 120th anniversary of the birth of Siegfried Sassoon at Matfield, but also marked the 90th anniversary of the Battle of
the Somme, at which Sassoon was present.
George Sherston's XI was put together by Bob Miller, with help from his regular side, the P G Wodehouse
Gold Bats. SSF committee member Graham Lampard contributed to a magnificent performance by the team, who came
within a whisker of defeating Matfield. In the end, despite a break in play for a short thunderstorm, the home
side's true grit won through, and the match was decided in the final over.
At close of play, an engraved tankard was presented by Jimmy Batten, former British light-heavyweight
champion, to SImon Knott, captain of Matfield . The title of "man of the match" was awarded by the umpires to
Andrew Pinnell in recognition of his swashbuckling century.
Special thanks go to HUBBLE & FREEMAN of Maidstone for donating the cricket balls.
A full match report appeared in Issue 11 of Siegfried's Journal.
In July 2007, Matfield made it two in a row. A match report by Bob Miller appears in issue no 13 of
